TORONTO
BETTY GOODWIN
28 NOVEMBER to 17 JANUARY
Barbara Edwards Contemporary, Toronto is pleased to present a solo exhibition of one of Canada's premier contemporary artists, Montreal-based Betty Goodwin (1923-2008). Goodwin's emotionally charged figures express the vulnerable and transitory nature of the human condition. The evocative power of Goodwin's images makes tangible the invisible reality of life's fragility.
Goodwin has had numerous solo and group shows within Canada, the United Stated and Europe. She represented Canada at many international events, including Tokyo International Print Biennial in 1974; São Paulo Biennial in 1989; and the Venice Biennial in 1995. Goodwin has been the recipient of several awards including the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award of the Canada Council for the Arts, 1981; the Banff Centre National Award for Visual Arts, 1984; and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, 1988. In 2003 Goodwin was honored with the Governor General's Award and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Her work can be found in major public and private collections across the country, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
